When Cai Lun first invented the papermaking process in 105 AD, he didn’t expect that ink printed on paper would rapidly become the medium for delivering written information over the next 2000 years. No doubt about the fact that people at this time preferred stone tablets or parchment to write on…

Fast forward to 2010 when Steve Jobs announced the iPad, the consumer reacted the same way. What is this device for and why should we use it? Why won’t we just use the existing computers to read the newspaper? Well, as the world becomes increasingly mobile the form factor of the iPad makes the experience vastly superior to reading news on a traditional computer. It’s almost like paper, or as Steve Jobs would say: It’s more intimate than a PC. The iPad travels with the reader and behaves like the paper version except that it visualizes the content in a totally new digital way: Videos, animations and interactivity enriches the consumption of today’s newspaper. In contrast to the PC the iPad is called a “lean back medium”, derived from the posture when using the device. Mathias Döpfner, Chairman and CEO of the German Media giant Axel Springer, adds to this:

“Every publisher in the world should sit down once a day and pray to thank Steve Jobs that he is saving the publishing industry.“ Mathias Döpfner

Local newspapers are slowly losing readers. Yet almost all newspapers have survived. Is the printed newspaper about to die? I’d answer it this way: No, but it’s sick and it’s not getting better. It is somewhat inevitable that the tablet will start to cannibalize the printed newspaper. Mathias Döpfner emphasizes that if today’s newspapers don’t transform their content to digital, they’ll have no future.

A&Z live erinnert ein wenig an die alte Ofehouse Partyzeit. Marc und ich wollten das Fotografieren in den Hintergrund stellen. Die Leute sollten kommen und sich amüsieren. Aus diesem Grund haben wir eine Bar aufgestellt, Sofas aus unseren Zimmern entfernt und Kilometerweise zum Event getragen, Vales Kühlschrank ausgeliehen, Lükus Soundanlage vibrieren lassen und einfach zusammen gelacht!

Dans le cadre du projet de semestre de deuxième année à l’école d’ingénieurs de fribourg, il nous a été demandé de développer en groupe un jeux vidéo ressemblant au fameux jeu d’artillerie « Worms » (Note : développé par Team17 à partir de 1994) qui dans notre cas s’appellera « Kouetron » (du patois Fribourgeois : limace). Le jeu devra être développé dans le langage Java.

Ce projet est une façon d’évaluer et de tester nos connaissances dans différents domaines abordés pendant les cours des quatre premiers semestres (IHM, génie logiciel, algorithmique, programmation concurrente et gestion de projet) et apprendre à travailler en groupe.

Les objectifs de ce projet sont de développer un client qui se connecte au serveur de jeu (créant ou joignant une partie) et qui permette de jouer une partie comme utilisateur humain ou comme Intelligence artificielle. Plus spécifiquement, notre « client » devra être capable d’afficher correctement les informations de jeu (terrain et éléments), calculer les trajectoires des objets, gérer l’interaction de l’utilisateur à travers le clavier et/ou la souris, communiquer correctement avec le serveur et implémenter une intelligence artificielle « compétitive ».

Je me suis occupé de la partie IHM (Inteface Homme – Machine, User Interface)

Il n’est actuellement pas possible de tester le jeu (la partie serveur qui est gérée par les profs est offline…).

Variante Gruppe 2

Mit mir im Team waren Michael Heinzer und Bernhard Leutwiler, zwei ausgezeichnete Studenten. Unsere Variante enthielt anstatt den originalen farbigen Knöpfen einen Drehjoystick, mit welchem die Kombinationen nachgespielt wurden. Als einzige Gruppe baten wir zudem einen 2-Spielermodus an.

Benutzerhandbuch

Nach einem Brainstorming zum Thema “Benutzerhandbuch” fiel vor allem 1 Gedanke besonders auf: Würfelform. Ein Würfel lädt zum Spielen ein, und so soll auch unser Benutzerhandbuch wirken. Wir kreierten ein würfelförmiges Benutzerhandbuch:

You’ll learn how to:

• move Items from one Application to another without Drag and Drop
• close Documents without clicking on the close button
• take a Screenshot of your Screen and save the file as an png on the desktop

All this magic behavior is done by pressing one or more special keys – also called Modifier keys – at the same time. To become a real Apple Geek you must learn those Keyboard shortcuts by heart.

The Swiss Keyboard Layout

The Swiss Keyboard is a QWERTZ Keyboard, called after the first six letters at the top left of the keyboard: Q, W, E, R, T and Z. It differs from the QWERTY layout by interchanging the “Z” and “Y” keys. This is more convenient since “Z” is much more used in the German language than “Y” and “T” and “Z” often appear next to each other in many German Words (Katze, Satz, schwitzen).

Special Keys

There are several “special” keys on an Apple keyboard.

Key	Function
	The command keys – also well known as the Apple Keys – are on each side of the space bar and are easily reachable by the thumb fingers. Almost every Mac OS keyboard shortcut is based on the command key. We will use them a lot.
	The Alt key used to change (alternate) the function of other pressed keys. By holding down the Alt key you can also print out almost every special characters.
	As many of you may have noticed, the Shift key is used to type capital letters. There are 2 shift keys on a Mac keyboard which are easily reachable by the little fingers. The shift key also perform some special operations in conjunction with another modifier key.
Tab	In Text processing Applications such as Microsoft Word or TextEdit the Tabulator key is used to advance the cursor to the next tab stop. You will see that it has another purpose in many “switch something” shortcuts.
Ctrl	The control key is less used in Mac OS and almost never performs any function when it is pressed by itself. It will perform a special operation in conjunction with another modifier key.
Fn	We typically find the Fn (Function)Key in compact keyboard layouts like laptops. It combines keys which are normaly kept seperate such as the delete key (FN – Backspace). If you have Fn on your keyboard the F1 – F12 keys are usually occupied with some Multimedia or System Control Functions. You must hold the Fn key to use the underlying (normal) F1-F12 functions.
Esc	The Esc (Escape) key is mostly used to stop, cancel or abort an action or dialog.

Let’s start with some basic shortcuts. How to type. I’ve listed the most requested shortcuts from Ex-Windows Users:

Well, you may want to know how to type the @ (at) character on a Swiss Keyboard. As you might have seen it is located near the center of the keyboard, more precise on the “G” key. You can type the “at” by holding down the Alt key. Here are some other special caracters often used in Switzerland. They all make use of the x key.

Am 27. Februar 2010 war es wieder soweit: Die zweite Ausgabe der IR stand vor der Tür. Themen für die Gestaltung und Atmosphäre der Party waren Labor, Wissenschaftler und Fernseher. Marc Zahno und ich haben uns für die IR2 ein besonderes Bijoux ausgedacht: Eine Fernsehwand mit alten Röhrenfernsehern. Warum gerade die schweren und uralten Röhrenfernseher? Weil sie ganz einfach am besten zum Motto der Party passten! Flachbildschirme und Beamer sind mitterweile 0815 =)

Damit auch der Erstauftritt des DJ-Duo Block Rocking Picknickers ein voller (optischer) Erfolg wird, bastelten wir noch einige TV-Köpfe dazu

Vorbereitungen

Als erstes mussten wir herausfinden, wie wir das Bildsignal vom MacBook auf die Fernseher bringen konnten. Zum Glück bat Apple für mein (altes) MacBook Pro einen seperaten S-Video und Composite Adapter an. Da es für unser Budget keine S-Video Verstärker gab, mussten wir auf das schlechtere Composite-Signal ausweichen.

Die Composite-Videoverstärker haben wir für 9 Euro auf Ebay ersteigert, hier unser 1. Test mit 4 TVs:

TV-Sammelaktion

Nun, wo bekommt man so viele TV’s her? Ganz einfach: Indem man sämtliche TV-Geschäfte in der Region bittet die alten zurückerhaltenen Röhrenfernseher aufzubewahren. Marc und Ich fuhren während 4 Wochen nach Thun, Köniz, Niederwangen Bösingen und Düdingen und sammelten insgesamt 27 Röhrentvs, wobei 24 funktionstüchtig waren.

Klassifikation

Philips, Sony, Daewoo, Radiotone, RFT, JVC, Imperial, Panasonic, B&O, MElectronic, Europe Future, Grundig, Toshiba, wir hatten so ziemlich jeden Hersteller dabei. Jedes Gerät wurde auf seine Funktionalität getestet und erhielt daraufhin eine Nummer (siehe Schema). Wir erstellten eine Liste mit folgenden Angaben über die Geräte:

• Breite, Höhe, Tiefe,
• Stromverbrauch

Schema der Fernsehwand

Für die Videowand benötigten wir ca. 100m Kabel und 70 Cinchstecker. Aus Kostengründen bestellten wir eine günstige Kabelrolle und stellten die Cinchkabel selber her (löten, löten, löten,…).

Umschaltkabel

Bei einigen Geräten konnten wir das Videosignal nicht mit den Frontknöpfen ansteuern. Um dieses Problem zu umgehen mussten wir spezielle Scartstecker mit einer integrierten Umschaltspannung von 12V auf Pin 8 konstruieren, damit die Geräte automatisch auf das Videosignal umschalten.

TV-Heads

Die defekten Geräte haben wir als TV-Heads eingesetzt. Zuerst wurde die Röhre ausgebaut und entschärft. Danach haben wir das Gehäuse geschliffen, gesprayt und ein Velohelm hineingeklebt.

Aufbau

Die Fernsehwand wurde auf einem 5m langen Wagen mit Paloxen aus der Region aufgebaut. Aus Sicherheitsgründen haben wir die Paloxen noch zusammen geschraubt, ein Spannset herumgeschnürt und den Wagen aufgebockt.

Die nächste Industrielle Revolution wird wahrscheinlich in 2 Jahren stattfinden. Welches visuelle Bijoux wird uns erwarten? Keine Ahnung, vielleicht eine 360° 3D Umgebung?
